Dispatching Rules

Definition of Dispatching Rules

  • The logic used to assign priorities to jobs at a work center.
  • A listing of manufacturing orders in priority sequence.
  • Dispatch list are normally generated daily and oriented by work center. Some commonly used rules are:
1. First come, first served (FCFS)
  - Jobs are performed in the sequence in which they are received or sequence by their arrival times.         See: First in, first out. The rules ignores due date and processing time.

2. Earliest job due date (EDD)
   - Jobs performed according to their due dates. They are sequencing the jobs by the earliest due date     for the operation.

3. Earliest operation due date (ODD)
   - Jobs performed according to their due dates. They are sequencing the jobs by the earliest due date     for the impending operation.

4. Shortest process time (SPT)
-Jobs are sequenced according to their process time. This rules ignore due dates, but it maximizes        the number of jobs processed. Orders with long process times tend to be delayed. They arrange the      order from shortest time to the longest time and make the shortest first.
